The National Union of Mineworkers
said it will be engaging with Kumba Iron Ore management to try and halt its
looming retrenchment process.
Kumba Iron Ore last week announced
that under Section 189 notice of the Labour Relations Act it will possibly cut
24 full-time jobs at Kolomela mine and 151 full-time jobs at Sishen mine.
NUM’s Chief Negotiator at Kumba Iron
ore Lucas Phiri said it came as a shock to us as the National Union of
Mineworkers that Kumba as a big company in South Africa will also fall in the same
route with other companies.
“What we did as the National Union
of Mineworkers, we are going to meet on Wednesday the 15th to chant
a way forward because our idea and objective is to fight this retrenchment with
everything in our disposal” Phiri added.
