The Eastern Cape Education Department has condemned the protest action by pupils and parents in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth.

The protest is over the shortage of teachers and lack of infrastructure in schools.

Departmental Spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said the department together with the parents had a meeting on Sunday to try and resolve some of the issues.

Mtima said in principle there has been an agreement on various issues that rate in them closing down schools. Today they have used the day to talk to their membership culminating in a meeting at 18:00 this evening.

“The Department has agreed to also meet tomorrow to tie the loose ends from the discussions that were held last night” Mtima added.
