The Railway Safety Regulator wrote to the Minister of Transport to inform her of the current progress of testing the locomotives purchased by PRASA.

The locomotives were purchased for commercial use.

The Minister believes the PRASA Board of Directors can handle the task despite challenges that have arisen.

Ministrial Spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso said the RSR has informed the Minister that they have given a no objection stage approval for PRASA to continue with its commissioning and testing of the locomotives.

Rikhotso said what it means is that they still have to conduct further tests before they can give a final approval for the locomotives to be utilised in the South African passenger rail market.

“The Minister has welcomed the report and she calls for patience while the RSR continues with their work”, Rikhotso concluded.
