The Western Cape MEC of Education says there has been a 42 percent drop in incidents of burglary and vandalism reported over the 2015 winter holiday period compared to the same time frame in 2013.

Before the holiday, Debbie Schafer, the MEC of Education, asked the communities to assist in protecting the schools.

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said during the same period in 2014 only 23 incidents of burglary and vandalism were reported, while in the same period of 2015, 18 incidents were reported.

Shelver said this signifies a drop of 5 incidents compare to the last year. The total number of incidents has dropped by 42% compared to the same period in 2013 when schools reported 31 incidents.
