Nyanga Police arrested 10
people for the possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and stolen
property on Wednesday.
The crackdown took place in
just two hours. The first gun was seized by police in Marks Tyam Street,
Lusaka.
Following an armed robbery
case, police found seven suspects with another gun inside a shack.
Captain FC Van Wyk said this
was followed by an arrest of a man after members received information of an
armed individual. Members spotted the
suspect while patrolling in the street. The suspect tried to run but was caught
with an unlicensed 9mm firearm.
This culminated to the arrest
of two Somalian nationals who were stopped while driving on the corner of
Bristol and Eisleben Road in Browns Farm. On searching the vehicle a 9mm Taurus
and 16 rounds of ammunition were recovered underneath the driver’s seat.
All suspects aged between 17
and 28 appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court Thursday, for the possession
of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
