A man in his 70’s was killed
and a man in his 20’s was left critical last night after their vehicle plunged
down an embankment off the R56 in Richmond, Pietermaritzburg.

Meiring said when ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found an SUV lying
on its roof 50 metres down an embankment.
Two lifeless bodies lay
roughly ten and twenty metres away from the vehicle.
On assessment, paramedics
found that the man in his 70s had already succumbed to his multiple fatal
injuries.
Nothing more could be done
for the patient and he was declared dead on the scene.
The second patient, a male
in his 20s was found in a critical condition and suffering from severe
hypothermia.
Treatment and advanced life
support interventions were performed on the patient before he was carried back
to the awaiting ambulance at the roadside.
Meiring mentioned the critically
injured patient was transported by ambulance to Edendale Hospital for further
treatment.
The cause of the collision
is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further
investigations, Meiring concluded.
