A City of Cape Town Metro Police officer has been shot dead. The shooting occurred in Avon Road in Eerste River a short while ago.

Police say the 53-year-old victim was robbed off his service pistol. The police’s Andre Traut says they are yet to arrest two suspects who fled the scene.

Three months ago the Transport Department said it was determined to introduce an insurance that will benefit the families of traffic officers killed in the line of duty.

The acting Transport Minister at the time, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, was speaking at a wreath laying ceremony for 19 slain officers - many of them killed while controlling traffic and executing roadblocks.
