Two people living in a dilapidated Johannesburg building were injured when it caught alight in the early hours of Sunday morning, City of Johannesburg emergency management services confirmed.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told reporters about 40 illegal occupants were evacuated from the block at the corner of Commissioner and Nugget streets at about 01:00 when fire services responded to the incident.

“Two of the unauthorised residents suffered burns but refused to be taken to hospital. They were treated at the scene, the cause of the fire is not yet known.”

Disaster risk management officials would be offering relief services to those affected by the blaze.
