Eskom says now that the
utility has been allowed to go ahead with the 9.4 percent electricity tariff
hike, it will allow the power giant to recover the R11.2 billion revenue it
needs.
The National Energy Regulator
of South Africa approved the increase but the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse challenged
this in the Pretoria High Court with an urgent interdict on Thursday.
Nersa denied Eskom’s initial request
for a 16.6 percent hike. Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe says another organisation is
also planning to challenge the increase in June.
“There’s company which has had its matter put on hold until June. The
court will hear them out and then they will make a decision by then, but the
good news is that from our side at least is that we’re able to implement our
tariff increase”, said Phasiwe.
