A memorial service will be
held in Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape today for former Pan Africanist Congress president,
Clarence Makwetu. He died in a Queenstown hospital on April 1 after a long
illness.
Makwetu‚ who was born in
December 1928 in the Cofimvaba area of the Eastern Cape‚ was a political
activist for 40 years from 1954 to 1996‚ when he retired from active politics.
Makwetu was the mechanism
behind the formation of the PAC armed -political win, the Azanian People's
Liberation Army.
The former PAC leader was
awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver by the Presidency for his contribution
to the struggle for a non-racial‚ non-sexist‚ just and democratic South Africa.
