A new police unit is expected to be launched soon to tackle illegal guns and drugs which are contributing to violence in the hostels of KwaMashu, Durban.

The announcement came during a visit by the government’s Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster.

The outreach programme comes after five men were murdered in two separate incidents in KwaMashu this week.

The government delegation walked through the hostels briefly, before addressing the community.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa believes stopping the violence requires more than just police intervention.

Police minister Nathi Nhleko said “You need to have a kind of broad-based approach in dealing with these matters,

Because you can have as much amount of police men and women on the ground, but if you don't deal with your social issues, matters of social development generally speaking, you still have a problem."
