President Jacob Zuma is
expected to visit Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape today for an update on the
implementation of Operation Phakisa, the oceans economy initiative.
The initiative was launched
in 2014 in Durban as an approach to development involving business,
labour, civil society, state-owned entities and government in the ocean
economy.
According to a statement from
the Department of Environmental Affairs, Zuma will highlight the achievements
of the programme in terms of job creation and the development of strategic
infrastructure.
The Oceans Economy Phakisa
focuses on marine transport, coastal and marine tourism, small harbour
developments and aquaculture amongst others.
Operation Phakisa seeks to
fast-track the country’s economic growth, by unlocking the so-called ocean
economy.
