The Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department has assured South Africans that the Independent Electoral Commission is still credible.

The Co-operative Governance Ministry says claims by Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema that the Independent Electoral Commission will not behave fairly during the local government elections, have no substance.

Cogta spokesperson Legadima Leso says the IEC has shown integrity by delivering successful national and local government elections since 1994.

At the EFF’s election manifesto launch on Saturday, Malema accused the IEC of rigging past elections, saying the commission stole EFF votes in Alexander in Gauteng and Tlokwe in the North West. He said that they would not allow the IEC to do so this time around.
