Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo
attributed the province’s success in bringing maternal deaths down to the use
of more than 700 midwives in the province’s public sector. The Western Cape
Maternal mortality significantly lower compared to the national average.
Speaking
at Stellenbosch University to mark International Day of the Midwife yesterday,
Mbombo commended the role of midwives in providing quality perinatal healthcare
services. About 50 percent of child births in the province was done by
midwives.
Part of the provincial
government’s strategy to improve survival rate of both mothers and children was
the first 100 days programme. Launched early this year it focuses on a child’s
development starting from conception through pregnancy birth and the first two
years of life.
