The
Western Cape health department has said in a statement Claims of services
"shutting down" at Tygerberg Hospital are untrue and only emergency
orthopaedic surgeries are under pressure.
This
is after a patient told reporters a clerk had said on Friday the hospital was
unable to deal with an influx of new patients and would have to turn people
away.
Spokesperson
Darren Francis confirmed the government hospital was "facing a
challenge" with emergency orthopaedic surgeries for this weekend and
currently has more than 100 cases of which 25 were emergency cases.
Francis
said the situation was being managed by using extra capacity across its health
system.
"Other
orthopaedic emergency cases will be shared with Groote Schuur Hospital and
other hospitals with an orthopaedic unit until the current emergency
orthopaedic case load is worked away.
