'Walking bus' initiative launched to improve schoolchildren's safety

Some Mitchells Plain residents say recent abduction attempts of school kids in the Helderberg region has forced them to improve safety for learners walking to school.

A group of parents and community leaders will be taking part in what's called a 'walking bus' initiative in the area.

It's aimed at creating safe and supervised routes for learners walking to and from school.
A group of volunteers are walking to several schools in Lentegeur this morning, to ensure that learners arrive there safely.

Parents say pupils are often robbed or threatened by gangsters while walking to school.
The Western Cape Community Safety Department says the 'walking bus' initiative has already been launched in numerous crime riddled communities.
