The Western Cape Education department says repairs to schools that have been vandalized during the winter holidays will likely exceed a half a million rand.

The department says 21 schools have been burgled or vandalized which is slightly up from last year when 18 were targeted by criminals.

The incidents occurred despite an increase in security at some high risk schools.

The department’s Jessica Shelver says they ask that every community member please help their schools by participating in neighbourhood watches and also reporting any suspicious behaviours in and around school’s immediately.

It says law enforcement officers will be deployed in the area to ensure everyone is safe on 3rd August.
