Marshall Security spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said that the men had been excavating a trench for the placement of cables when the sides gave way, burying them alive.

The site was on Umhlanga Rocks Drive near the Ilala Ridge area. Reports say the structural collapse took place at an Umhlanga housing complex.

Various officials worked together to free the men, in their 30s, from the soil and rubble.

They were taken to hospital for treatment.
