Khayelitsha community pleads for help after fire destroys homes

400 Residents of Khayelitsha are pleading for help after 152 homes were destroyed on New Year’s day due to a fire. The homes that were destroyed is from the Taiwan informal settlement.

The fire occurred on Friday evening and it is still unclear how it started.

Khayelitsha community activist, Ntsiki Dlulani, said that any assistance will be welcomed whether it be bedding, toiletries, clothing, food etc. She says the community has nothing.

The residents were left find their own way as they were not provided with emergency shelter. Dlulani is upset at the lack of support shown by the City of Cape Town and their inability to provide fire kits.

The City, however, said that they can no longer make starter kits for fires and floods available due to budget cuts. They said that they need to contact the national government directly for funding.
