Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the Johnson & Johnson vaccination drive through the Sisonke programme, will resume on Wednesday.
The trial was paused earlier this month after 6
patients in America developed a blood clot. It has since been established that
there's a one in a million chance of developing a clot after taking the
vaccine.
Mkhize said this was a huge development for the
country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The health minister added that they were now
aiming to complete the vaccination of health workers with 95 sites across South
Africa.
“Phase one is due to end on 16 May 2021 and we
remain committed to vaccinating as many of the 1,2 million health care workers
targeted as possible, despite the unforeseen interruption to our programme. The
95 sites will be published in the next issue of I Choose Vaccination Bulletin and on the Health and SA Coronavirus
website.
Mkhize says those taking the vaccine should be
mindful of the following side effects
“Issues of headache, dizziness, abdominal pain,
vomiting… so we need people to ensure that they are always alert so that we can
chat. But out of the 300,000 that have been vaccinated in SA, we haven’t had
any serious symptoms.”
