The
Independent Police Investigations Directorate (IPID) said it had opened a
corruption case and foiled the ends of justice against a lawyer, who allegedly
offered bribes of up to R 60,000 to attempted murder victims.
It
is alleged the lawyer offered 30 000 each to victims of attempted murder so
that they would not cooperate in the case against the Maripane brothers – a police
officer and his civilian brother.
Ipid spokesman Ndileka Cola said the lawyer
was identified in court and arrested yesterday after he allegedly confronted
one of the victims because she was not supposed to be present.
The victims also allegedly recorded the conversation of him trying to prevent the case from going to court. The suspect (lawyer) is expected to appear in Thembisa Magistrate Court 27 May 2021.
