2 dead on fishing vessel in West Coast

West Coast police have opened an inquest docket after two crewmen died on the fishing vessel in Yzerfontein.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said that NSRI Yzerfontein duty crew and police were alerted following reports from a local fishing vessel that they were heading towards Yzerfontein harbour with 8 crew onboard of which 2 crewmen were suspected to be deceased, just before 10am on Friday.

“NSRI medics met the vessel on her arrival at Yzerfontein harbour and a doctor, who happened to be at the harbour at the time, assisted. Two adult male crewmen of the fishing vessel were sadly confirmed to be deceased,” said Lambinon.

“Police attended at the scene and investigations are under way. The bodies of the deceased men were taken into the care of Western Cape government health forensic pathology services. Police have opened an inquest docket."

According to the police’s Joseph Swartbooi, the circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. Swartbooi added that no foul play has been suspected.
