Convicted Cape murderer, Phelo Mtala, sentenced to 2 life terms

A notorious criminal was sentenced to 2 life terms behind bars at the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

According to reports, 36-year-old Phelo Mtala, has killed innocent people since 2014, but was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Mtala was convicted for the murders of Anga Dekeni, Solethu Nongenzi and Mzimasi Majelimane and of the possession of an illegal firearm in 2016.

The police’s Joseph Swartbooi said that the suspect continued shooting several victims, threatening families of the victims until he was arrested in 2019 for the possession of drugs.

Whilst in custody he managed to escape but was soon apprehended and returned to prison.

Mtala, had been due to return to Pollsmoor prison in 2019, after his court appearance but managed to escape by allegedly putting his fingerprints on somebody else's release form, who had been in court with him on the day, and who was then taken back to Pollsmoor instead.

‘’After an intense investigation by a committed team of seasoned detectives, the suspect learned his fate in court when he was sentenced to two life terms behind bars,’’ said Warrant Officer, Joseph Swartbooi

The Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. General Thembisile Patekile lauded the team of committed detectives for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that justice is served.
