Firefighters are battling a blaze in Highlands in the Overberg region, which is burning towards Kleinmond.
According to the NGO, Working on Fire, two helicopters
are water bombing the flames.
‘’The six inbound teams are from Robertson,
Paarl, Somerset, and three from Grabouw. Three Working on Fire aerial resources
that consist of a spotter plane that is performing the air traffic control
function for the two choppers who are water bombing the flames.’’
‘’Our resources are assisting the Overberg
District Municipality, Overstrand Municipality, Provincial Disaster Management,
Cape Nature, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.’’
Spokesperson, Limakatso Khalianyane, said that
teams battled the blaze since Saturday, but stopped working because of poor
lighting.
‘’Yesterday (Saturday), WOF dispatched four
teams and four aerial resources that flew for seven hours and were stood down
because it was getting darker.’’
Khalianyane said the fire is burning actively
high in the mountain and between the mountain and the R-44 in the direction of
Arrabella.
‘’Early this morning the fire line moved down
to Kleinmond - Heuningkloof & -Klip - (Western top) and structural
protection was required. No damage to homes and no structures lost. Currently, the fire is burning actively high
in the mountain and between the mountain and the R44 direction Arrabella.’’
‘’During the night resources from the City of
Cape Town joined the fight. The aerial resources are already deployed to assist
with our suppression efforts,’’ added Khalianyane
