Cape town fire kill five in Khayelitsha

Five people have died in a fire in Khayelitsha, Cape Town in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to police the fire broke out in Nonqubela, Site B in Khayelitsha.The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse reported that the five victims found have yet to be identified.

He said: The City's Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 01:50 that an informal structure was on fire in Bhemye Crescent. The crew from Lansdowne Road Fire Station was soon on the scene, where firefighters found a structure fully engulfed in flames.

"The scene was handed over to the South African Police Service at 03:15," he said.

Ward councillor Thando Pimpi said the five people did not looked to be related despite them sleeping in the shack at the time of the fire.

He said only one shack was burned down, but no one lived. He added that the cause of the fire was still unclear.
