A collapsed bulk sewage network has created a sewage lake outside of Kimberly. It is estimated that the overhaul of the system and cleaning up will cost R5 billion according to the Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul.
On Friday Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gclaeka met with Northern Cape Premier Saul to ascertain how the provincial government will address the sewage leak.
The sewage lake has reportedly claimed the life of one person after a driver of a delivery truck lost control and crashed into the lake. In two weeks Mkhwebane will receive a report on how the provincial government will tackle the issue. The local community in Sol Plaatje was urged not to flush items such as sanitary products, and nappies as a way of preventing further back-up issues.
