Eskom announced on Wednesday morning that they will begin stage 2 power cuts until Monday. The power cuts will begin Wednesday at 11am and continue until Monday at 5am.

“This load shedding is necessary due to a shortage of generation capacity following breakdowns of two more generating units during the night.” Eskom said in a statement. Eskom will be using this time to replenish the emergency generation reserves.

In total over 17,000 megawatts have been lost due to a combination of output, planned maintenance, and unplanned load lost due to breakdowns. Three generating units are expected to return to service by Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town will only be going into Stage 1 load shedding from 11am to 10pm on Wednesday. Thereafter Stage 2 will be implemented until 6am Thursday.
