One suspect yet to be rearrested following escape in Malmesbury

Three prisoners escaped last week from the Malmesbury Correctional Facility in the Western Cape. According to police so far two inmates have been rearrested, the second having been rearrested earlier this week.

The Department of Correctional Services along with other law enforcement agencies are working around the clock to ensure that last remaining inmate was arrested as he, Juneal Jacobs, was arrested for murder meanwhile the other suspects who escaped are convicted for rape, theft, murder and robbery.

DCS acting national commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale said the prison escapes of the three inmates, within the space of 24 hours, is a serious cause for concern.

The Correctional Services Department said that not divulge how the prisoners managed to escape as the revelations may jeopardise with investigations to arrest the remaining inmate.

The department intensified its campaign and processes to prevent unnecessary security lapses, mismanagement, as well the tightening of management systems and increasing compliance with policy and controls.

Over 60 inmates reportedly escaped from the same prison in 2020 before they were rearrested. The department again said that it cannot divulge how this happened as it may pose a security risk.
