LEAP officers attacked while on night petrol

Two suspects were arrested and eight others detained following an attack on the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers in Steenberg on Tuesday.

According to Safety and security mayco member JP Smith after 9pm, the LEAP Reaction Unit came under attack from unknown shooters while patrolling in Hillview, Steenberg before they withdrew and requested back up from surrounding LEAP areas.

The City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate has condemned attacks on its officers who were deployed into volatile local communities after

 “The officers withdrew from the informal settlement area and requested back-up from surrounding LEAP areas. Reinforcements were deployed, and within minutes additional resources arrived from Nyanga, Gugulethu and Mfuleni areas.

“Officers received intel and surrounded an identified structure whereby teams were able to clear the dwelling using a tactical approach”, said JP Smith

According to reports ten suspects were apprehended, while two were in possession of unlicensed firearms – a 9mm Luger and a Taurus revolver. The two suspects were taken to the Muizenberg police station following their arrests, while the other suspects were detained and profiled.
