Leonard Mzingeli was charged on four counts for the murder and rape of 17 year-old Amahle Quku and for the attempted murder of another woman.
The
25 year-old murdered the teenager in Philippi, Cape Town on 20 June 2020 and pleaded
guilty last month to killing Amahle by choking her and dragging her body in a
dam. He was convicted in the Western Cape High Court for her murder after strangling
the teenager with his hands and raping her.
The teenage girl`s body was found near a dam in the Siyahlala settlement in Browns Farm after she was last seen by her family last month. After the trial, Judge Nyathi praised the evidence presented by the woman who survived Mzingeli`s attack.
“The woman was an impressive witness, she gave clear and crisp evidence about the identification of the person who attacked her on that day…she was not shaken and did not deviate from her version even though the defence asked questions to cast doubt on her evidence”, the judge said.
Mzingeli
was found guilty on two counts of rape, one count of murder and another count
of attempted murder which was related to another woman (witness) who survived
Mzingel`s attack. The date for his sentencing is confirmed on 19 July.
