83 people were killed in the Western Cape, within a space of a week.
This was revealed by police Minister, Bheki Cele, who
addressed the media on Thursday, providing an update on the crime situation in
the province.
The majority of the murders, says the police minister, took
place in and around the metro, as well as the Cape flats.
Cele says arguments, robberies and gang violence remain the
top causative factors for these deaths.
Amongst those killed, was a 39-year old police Sergeant
Sthembiso Mnatwana who was shot and killed last Thursday in Samora Machel.
Mnatwana worked at the Cape Town central police station, and he was killed
while returning home after a night shift.
Cele said the Western Cape has the third highest number of
gun-related murders in the country. He welcomed the confiscation from SAPS of
33 firearms and 538 rounds of ammunition, in a week
Furthermore, he revealed that police in the province have
intercepted and seized crystal meth, cocaine and heroine including R33 million
rand worth of mandrax in recent months.
Cele says SAPS are doing everything in their power to
combat crime in the Western Cape.
