City officials concerned over the spike in trauma and assault cases reported

The City of Cape Town has raised concerns over the spike in trauma and assault cases that’s reported to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre.

According to the latest statistics, 1 870 incidences were reported in the past week. This is 146 more than the previous week. There’s been an increase in the number of assaults, domestic violence calls and road accidents involving both motor vehicles and pedestrians, with majority being for Assault at 172. Last week that number stood at 122.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, says these figures are not surprising, as the City tends to see an increase near month-end.

Smith appealed to citizens to drink responsibly as the relationship between trauma cases and alcohol consumption, he says are disappointing.
