Five people sustained gunshot wounds in Khayelitsha. According to police, the shooting erupted at the corners of Cosa and Dika Street on Tuesday night. Authorities initiated a 72-hour activation plan to get to the bottom of the incident.
Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, said that the
victims were between the ages of 21 and 38.
"According to reports, the victims were transferred to
a nearby medical facility for treatment by private vehicles. The five victims
sustained gunshot wounds. There were also another two victims that were injured
whilst running away. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be
arrested. The motive for this shooting incident is currently unknown”, said Van
Wyk.
Community members believe the shooting might be
gang-related. Since March this year, 26
people have died from mass shootings in Khayelitsha
The incident came just two days after Police Minister, Bheki
Cele, visited the area on Monday at an imbizo with men in Khayelitsha on
gender-based violence and femicide, domestic violence, and sexual offences.
