Five suspects to appear in court for attempted kidnapping and possession of an illegal firearm with ammunition

Five suspects between the ages of 20 and 30 are expected to appear in court on Tuesday in Athlone following their arrest on Saturday afternoon.

The suspects are charged with conspiracy to commit a kidnaping, the possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition and fraud.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said in her media statement that on Saturday afternoon an alarm was raised by a Chinese businesswoman in Ottery with Lansdowne police, about a suspicious vehicle that was following her since she left her shop.

This resulted in the police quickly responding to the matter and stopping the vehicle that was driven by the five suspects. During the search, officials found an illegal firearm that did not have a registered serial number and rounds of ammunition.

Police also found vehicle license plates that did not match the disk displayed on the vehicle.
