Bodies of two construction workers trapped in a manhole in Mitchells Plain have been recovered

The bodies of the two construction workers who were trapped in a manhole in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain have been recovered

The City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Services said the incident unfolded around 10a.m on Tuesday, when emergency services responded to a report that someone had fallen into a manhole in Rocklands, and that a second person had also become stuck.

Spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said that one of the bodies was recovered on Wednesday morning, and medics declared him deceased, while another was recovered yesterday. He explained that by the time firefighters arrived, someone had already been extricated and taken to hospital.

Given that it was a sewage drain, firefighters had to use special equipment to protect them from harmful bacteria

Carelse added that one firefighter had to be treated for possible contamination from sewage water during the rescue
