Eskom announced that stage 3 load shedding will be extended until Friday morning at 05:00 and stage 2 will again be implemented at from 16:00 on Friday until 05:00 Monday morning.
The power utility has been struggling to maintain the country`s power supply this year since, as South Africa is in it`s 143rd day of load shedding in 2022, making it the worst year on record.
Eskom said the latest bouts of rolling power cuts was due to the
breakdowns of five generating units during the course of Wednesday night.
“Breakdowns of five generating
units overnight, two of which have returned to service, have exacerbated
current generation capacity shortages, forcing the escalation of load shedding”.
“Since morning a generation unit each at Arnot and Kriel power stations has been returned to service. Two generation units at Kendal and one at Kusile power stations were taken offline for repairs”.
“We currently have 5 146MW on
planned maintenance, while another 16 434MW of capacity is unavailable due to
breakdowns,” it said.
The power utility said it will
provide a further update on Sunday afternoon about the status of load shedding for the week ahead.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town announced that it will implement various load shedding stages.
