Former president, Jacob Zuma released from prison system

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that former president Jacob Zuma has been officially released from the prison system.

The Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in jail for contempt of court after failing to appear before the commission of inquiry into state capture. He spent two months at Estcourt Correctional Centre last year and was later granted medical parole to complete his sentence at home.

Friday would've marked the official end of his sentence if he had not been granted medical parole.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says he is now officially out of the system after complying with the medical parole conditions.

"Mr Zuma complied with his conditions for medical parole as set out during his placement. All administrative processes have now been concluded and the Sentence Expiry Date marks the end of him serving his sentence under community corrections.”
