The Independent Electoral Commission in the Western Cape held a By-Election, on Wednesday. The vacancy was due to the resignation of the previous councillor.

IEC head in the province, Michael Hendrickse, said special votes were conducted to give an opportunity to more than 23 000 registered voters on Tuesday, who applied and were approved to cast their votes at the voting stations or voters who applied and were approved for home visits.

‘’The number of registered Voters in Ward 5 is 23 258 which consisted of six voting districts where voting stations opened from 07h00 to 21h00.’’

The By-Election was contested by candidates from Africa Restoration Alliance (ARA), Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP)

‘’The party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 92.26% of the votes cast, compared to 87.69% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday [Wednesday]was 24.59%,’’ says Hendrickse,

Hendrickse says despite a low voter turnout, he was pleased in the manner that the staff conducted the by-elections.
