A section of Zeekoevlei, situated in the False Bay Nature Reserve, has been closed for recreational use until further notice.
In a statement, the City of Cape Town said the temporary
closure, which is from Pelican Lodge to Pelican View, is due to a sewage spill
on Monday.
‘’Residues of the spill were detected at the mouth of the
Big Lotus River that leads into the Zeekoevlei waterbody, and an investigation
is underway to determine the causes,’’ said Eddie Andrews, the City’s Deputy
Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
‘’We have been monitoring the water quality since the
spill, and the latest results confirmed high levels of E.coli at the sampling
point opposite the inlet of the Big Lotus River in particular,’’ he added.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid contact with
the water in affected areas. Andrews cautioned that no fishing or water sports
are allowed, adding that they are conducting water sampling on a regular basis.
‘’The City apologises for any inconvenience caused as a
result of the closure of the water area and thank the public for their
cooperation during this period,’’ said Eddie Andrews, the City’s Deputy Mayor
and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
