A mother and her infant died in a fire in Kensington in the early hours of Wednesday.

The City's Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said firefighters was alerted that a structure was on fire just before 3a.m and that a family was trapped inside their home in 14th street.

“Crews from Epping, Brooklyn and Milnerton were on scene and found the bodies of the 32-year-old mother and the 16-month-old baby boy, who had succumbed to fatal burn wounds.”

“By 04:30, Firefighters had managed to extinguish the blaze that destroyed the structure and left three persons displaced,” added Carelse.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire is unknown and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
