The Grassy Park police constable who was shot and killed last Thursday, will be laid to rest on Saturday
26-year-old Ashton Pedro was shot in his chest after he and
his partner reacted on information of an armed suspect in Blackbird Avenue in
Grassy Park and was shot during an altercation with the suspect, while his
partner escaped the incident unharmed.
A 42-year-old man has since been arrested, for the murder
of a Grassy Park constable and he is set to make another appearance at the
Wynberg Magistrates Court, next week.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele will deliver the Eulogy at the
funeral service of Pedro.
Speaking at the memorial service on Wednesday, Police
Oversight & Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, described Pedro as a hero
who protected the community
‘’I commend officer Pedro as he has lost his life while
diligently performing his duties to serve the community… As the Western Cape
Government, we regard him as a hero as through his unfortunate but untimely
sacrifice, he not only protected his community but also ensured that a known
criminal could be removed from our streets.
‘’I encourage all communities across the province to work
with all police officers and all Law Enforcement agencies. All crimes should be
reported so that criminals can be arrested and convicted. Gangsters and
criminals should known that they are not welcome in the communities and that
there will be no place to hide,’’ added Allen.
