The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management officials have completed the assessment of the Phola Park fire that gutted through the Phillipi area, on Thursday, and confirmed that the blaze destroyed 75 structures, with 378 persons affected.
The municipality said the cause of the fire, situated next
to the Golden Arrow Depot in Philippi, is unknown, however its believed that a
strong south-easter fanned the fire, on Thursday afternoon. The blaze was
extinguished just after 6p.m
‘’The Gift of the Givers, Muslim Hands, SASSA and Beautiful
Gate are providing humanitarian assistance.
Various City Departments are on site and busy with assessments,’’ said the
City’s Charlotte Powell.
‘’Eskom to restore electricity, Water & Sanitation will
attend to damaged infrastructure and Solid Waste will remove fire debris. The
Department of Home Affairs was also activated to assist residents with identity
documents,’’ she added.
