One dead, hundreds displaced following Phillipi fire.

The year started off on a grim note for some Phillipi residents, as a fire destroyed about 200 structures in the Phola Park Informal Settlement in the early hours of today, leaving one dead.

The City's Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said firefighters were alerted to the fire just before 3a.m, with reports indicating that structures were on fire off Rochester Road.

He added that a woman sustained fatal burn wounds.

"A total of 12 firefighting appliances and more than 50 staff battled the blaze which was brought under control at about 6am."

"The body of the woman who died, was found among the debris, and it is estimated that more than 200 structures were destroyed, leaving hundreds of people homeless," added Jermaine Carelse, City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Services spokesperson.

Carelse said the cause of the fire is unknown.
