On Monday morning Western Cape Firefighters battled to extinguish a veld fire in the Slanghoek Valley, outside Rawsonville.
According to the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s
Jo-Anne Otto firefighrter were called out to the area at around nine o'clock last.
She said that the blaze was being fueled by high density
mixed vegetation and very old Proteas and Blue Gums.
Meanwhile the City of Cape Town reportedly experienced an
increase in vegetation and residential fires in recent months.
According to the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety
and Security, Alderman JP Smith, Between October last year and January this
year, there has been 6 024 Vegetation fires, 644 Formal residential fires, 893 Informal
residential fires, and 80 Fatalities reported.
