Three of South Africa’s five police stations where most murders have been reported are in the Western Cape.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele released on Friday, the crime figures for the last quarter of 2022. The most murders – 89 – were reported at
the Mfuleni police station, 86 at the Delft police station and 68 at the Nyanga
police station. All three are on the Cape Flats.
Nationally, 7 555 murders were committed from October to
the end of December 2022. This amounts to at least 80 murders per day during the
period under review.
Only in Limpopo were 263 fewer murders committed compared
to the previous quarter.
‘’Intense community centered and intelligence led-solution
is needed to fully address the proliferation of firearms. Again, Someone
Somewhere, Somehow - Knows Something! Police
are also on the pulse in removing illegal weapons off our streets,’’ said
Police Minister, Bheki Cele
Out of the 7 555 people murdered in the reported period, 3
144 people were killed with a firearm, 2 498 people were killed with other
weapons such as knifes, sharp and blunt instruments, bricks and in many cases
bare hands.
‘’It is clear, a broader conversation must be had about
what is at the heart of violent crime in the country. While gun violence is
problematic and poses a serious threat to lives and livelihoods,’’ said Police
Minister, Bheki Cele.
‘’With the analysis of the current and previous statistics,
it is quite evident that firearms are only part of a bigger problem. At the
core of the matter, is the human behavior. We have to be honest as South
Africans about the causes of violence and address them,’’ he added.
