Alleged Parliament arsonist referred to an Eastern Cape institution for psychiatric observation

Alleged Parliament arsonist, Zandile Mafe, will be referred to an institution in the Eastern Cape for psychiatric observation.

Mafe briefly appeared in the Western Cape High Court as part of the court's pre-trial proceedings. Mafe had earlier refused to be admitted to the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town.

The state indicated on Friday that it is ready to proceed with the trial as soon as Mafe's 30 days of observation are over.

Judge Nathan Erasmus will make a final order on his mental state on March 28.

A large part of the parliament building was left in ruins after a fire broke out in the National Assembly more than a year ago.
