President Cyril Ramaphosa announced changes to the national executive on Monday, where he appointed the new ANC deputy president Paul Mashatile as his second in command and former Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa as electricity minister.
The electricity minister’s primary role will be
to improve Eskom’s power station performance.
Ramokgopa previously served as mayor of the
City of Tshwane and was the head of investment and infrastructure in the
president’s office.
The new deputy president will be replacing former deputy
president David Mabuza. The new appointed Minister of Tourism is Ms Patricia de
Lille, taking over Lindiwe Sisulu and taking over Fikile Mbalula is Ms
Sindisiwe Chikunga as minister of transport.
Mondli Gungubele was appointed as the new
communications minister. Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the former Minister of
Communications and Digital Technologies, will take over Gungubele’s previous
responsibility over state security and other tasks.
A cabinet reshuffle has been widely expected since
Ramaphosa was re-elected leader of the governing African National Congress at a
party leadership contest in December, paving the way for him to run for a
second term in 2024.
The president said that delay of appointing new ministers is
the result of a number of processes that needed to be followed.
“I have sought to balance the need for new skills and
capabilities to drive the agenda that we outlined in the State of the Nation
Address with the important task of ensuring stability and continuity in the
work of government.”
