On
Wednesday, the police's Commercial Crimes Unit raided the offices of City of
Cape Town mayoral committee member for human settlements Malusi Booi.
According
to reports the police stormed into Booi's offices and took his phone, staff
members' devices and documents. No has been arrested.
Cape
Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed the raid.
According
to the Police spokesperson Andrè Traut, the
operation was part of an investigation into fraud and corruption and that
detectives attached to the Commercial Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at
an office at the Civic Centre yesterday.
“Electronic equipment and documents were confiscated. Details
of this seizure and investigation cannot be divulged at such a premature stage”
said Traut.
Last
year, police arrested eight City officials as part of an investigation into
tender fraud at the municipality.
They were accused of inflating invoices and paying service providers for construction work that was not carried out.
