The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said, as of 30 March, it received applications for 90 305 learners for the 2024 school year. On the 20 March, applications stood at 51 629.
The provincial department opened its online application
process on 13 March. The 2024 online application process is open until 23h59 on
14 April 2023.
‘’With parents applying for more than one school for their
children, the total number of individual applications to schools received thus
far is 298 530. It is extremely important for parents to apply on time for the
coming school year, so that our department can plan more effectively for
placement for their children,’’ said David Maynier, Western Cape’s Education
MEC.
‘’We have had a few technical niggles along the way, which
is expected with the change to a new system. However, the move away from the
notoriously unstable national government State Information and Technology
Agency system has proved to be the right one. While SITA services experienced
outages, our admissions system has remained up and running since the
applications window opened.’’
‘’Parents who experience technical problems are able to log
a query using the “contact us” option at the top of the admissions page, and we
will assist parents with technical issues to resolve each and every problem as
soon as possible,’’ added Maynier.
According to the MEC, the department’s technical team
worked ‘’long hours throughout weekends and the public holiday’’, to follow up
on any outstanding queries.
Maynier reminded parents/caregivers about the WCED’s pop-up stalls at schools and malls, to assist parents in person, to capture
applications for parents who do not have access to the internet.
