Six suspects are to appear in the Cape Town Regional Court on Tuesday for the possession of abalone and managing a drying facility.
According to the Hawks, the recovered abalone was valued at R2.8 million. It was discovered when the National Investigating Unit (NIU) followed up on information about two vehicles en route to Cape Town.
After pulling over one of the vehicles, officers discovered seven bags of wet abalone and arrested a foreign national. The second vehicle was also pulled over and five South Africans were arrested.
Upon further investigation, officers were led to a site in Century City, Milnerton, where they found an abalone processing facility. They confiscated large amounts of the product, along with the equipment used to process it.
The six suspects face charges ranging from illegal processing of abalone to illegal possession of abalone.
